Electricity IS American.
A brief history on where we’ve come from on where we’re going on the path to complete energy independence.
This country was the home of the most pivotal point in discovery and use of electricity. It is only fitting that as Americans we should be the leaders in the current electrification revolution. Our goal as a country should be complete energy independence by fully electrifying our society and producing the energy to power the grid right here at home.
Here is a timeline of where we’ve come from and where we’re going.
1752 - Benjamin Franklin proves storm clouds are electric. Electricity flowed from a storm cloud, down a wet kite strong and into a metal key he held to give him a serious shock. He’s luck to be alive.
1879 - Thomas Edison produced the first long lasting lightbulb in laboratory.
1899 - Baker electric produces one of the first electric cars, growing to the largest automotive company in the world by 1906.
1996 - American company General Motors (GM) launches the EV1, the first purpose built and mass produced electric vehicle of the modern EV era. These were foolishly recalled despite huge fan disappointment, as documented in the film Who Killed The Electric Car?
2008 - American company Tesla launches the Roaster, producing just over 2,500 and proving an electric car can be fast and sexy. This model would provide the revenue to finance the Model S which would intern pay for the Model 3 as detailed in Elon Musk’s now famous Secret Tesla Master Plan (just between you and me) where he clearly describes how the future will unfold.
2017 - Tesla launched the Model 3, the most widely sold EV to date and paves the way for the Model Y.
2020 - Tesla launches the Model Y, which is on pace to become the best selling car of any kind.
Today - Here we are with all this history, now let’s make some prediction for the future based on trajectories and impending regulation that will push us to electrify.
2023 - It becomes illegal nationally to product or sell incandescent lightbulbs. In anticipation of a rush on bulb and confusion over how to replace them, we made this guide.
2023 - Tesla Model Y becomes the best selling model of any consumer car or truck for the first time in history.
2029 - >60% of the grid is powered by solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear. This will lead to more regulation and incentives for homeowners to electrify.
2040 - >95% of cars and trucks sold in the US are electric. This will mean homes and businesses everywhere need chargers and the grid energy to support the demand.
2043 - >95% of the grid is powered by solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear. At this point burning fossil fuel is like owning a horse, you can do it if you have the money, but your fellow citizens will call it silly.
Where do we go from here? The short is if you want to be a part of this bright future you should electrify your house and car as soon as possible. There are great products available today and in all cases you can find a way to spend the same or less over the life of the product as you would on their fossil fuel equivalent.
